HABITAT FOR HUMANITY OF GREATER ORLANDO AREA SEEKS SPONSORS AND VOLUNTEERS FOR 2014 WOMEN BUILD

ORLANDO, Fla. (February 20, 2014) – Habitat for Humanity of Greater Orlando Area is seeking sponsors and volunteers to support its 2014 Women Build, a national initiative where construction crews of female volunteers will be raising $500 each, hammering nails and raising walls at Habitat construction sites across the country. Over the last decade, Lowe’s has been a national sponsor of Women Build, contributing nearly $40 million to support Habitat’s mission to provide simple, decent and affordable housing.

Locally, Habitat of Greater Orlando will run its two-month program from March 8, International Women’s Day through May 10, the Saturday before Mother’s Day. This year’s fundraising goal is $150,000. Each year, the event attracts nearly 300 Central Florida women volunteers.

“We welcome women from all different backgrounds to form fundraising teams and participate in Women Build,” said Dee Danmeyer, president/CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Orlando Area. “For those who would like to contribute in other ways, sponsorship and donation opportunities are also available.”

This year’s building project will take place in Orlando and be dedicated to Sherall Leo, a single-mother of two. Leo and her family currently reside in a 550 square-feet one-bedroom apartment where rent is currently more than 30 percent of her monthly income.

“I feel so blessed to be given the chance to become an official homeowner,” said Leo. “My hope is that hundreds of women will be introduced to the wonderful work Habitat does every day to address housing needs in Central Florida.”

Fundraising for Women Build is spearheaded by the steering committee – led by Committee Chair Karen Riggle, Consulate Health Care. Members include: Ivy Guardiola, Florida Hospital; Teresa Colling, SunTrust Bank; Jill Sheehan, AON Hewitt and Caroline C. Hardin.
